Junkies Hijack School

The current state of the project

Suspected criminals have taken over an abandoned GETFUND school project at Community 22, a suburb of Ashaiman.

Cocaine and marijuana smokers have turned the place into their hideout and an avalanche of smoke could be seen daily spiralling from the uncompleted classrooms.

The wee smokers have also been defecating in the classrooms.

The school which most residents anticipate could be used as a technical and vocational institute is believed to have been stalled by the ineptitude and the tight handedness of the Ashaiman Municipality.

Several appeals by the residents for the completion of the important project were not heeded and the structure is gradually decaying.

Ghetto built in one of the classrooms

Two contracts were allegedly awarded in the sum of GH¢448,957.50 to  both Messer Casback Ghana Ltd and Delovely Company Ltd somewhere in July, 2011 for the construction of a three storey 12 classrooms unit each with offices and teachers common rooms.

The projects which were about 45 per cent complete were supposed to be handed over to government in March, 2012.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the school, the place was bushy with deep cracks all over the floor with some of the windows falling apart.

A food vendor in the area, Augustina Amevoh when contacted said, “We are appealing to the government to complete the school, because so many people will benefit from it.”

She appealed to the government and public-spirited individuals to come to their aid to help address the pertinent challenges facing the abandoned project.
