Some school children cleaning human feaces in their classroom

A surge in persistent defecation in classrooms has prompted education officials in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region to close down the Adansi Apagya D/A Primary and Junior High Schools indefinitely.

The District Education Directorate headed by Emmanuel Dormenyah took the decision to save the children and their teachers from the undignified and hazardous job to clear and clean faeces every other day.

He said the inhuman act had been a constant feature in recent times at the two schools with the act graduating from mere defecation on the floor of classrooms to smearing of tables, blackboards and kitchens by the unscrupulous persons in the community.

According to Mr Dormenyah, members of the community’s neighbourhood watch committee last month arrested and prosecuted six young girls who were involved in the reprehensible conduct, but this did not deter the culprits.

He stated that despite the fine and warning by a court, the act resurfaced Monday when pupils and teachers went to school only to find the school kitchen and some classrooms smeared with feaces.

The education director asserted that the decision, though painful, he had no other option as the embarrassing development had got the teachers traumatised.

Rosaline Ahanator, head teacher of the school, said the situation has become frustrating and unbearable, and pointed out that the community had ignored their protestation against the act.

She indicated that the teachers had told her they were fed up with constant cleaning of human feaces in their classrooms, and had threatened to leave the schools.

Assemblyman for the area, Kwabena Manu, admitted that the situation was bad and embarrassing to them as residents of Apagya, and pledged his readiness to tackle the reprehensible conduct.

According to him, he was instrumental in the arrest and prosecution and subsequent fine of the six girls who were identified as some of the people behind the despicable act, intimating that he would work tirelessly to stop the practice.
