POSTERS of what appears to be a new political party have sprung up in Kumasi, with claims that some former Ministers of State in the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government are founding members.
The yet-to-be registered political party, known as New Labour Party (NLP), has the human palm as its symbol and “Together We Build” as its motto, with red and yellow as its colours. It bears some semblance to one of the several Kumasi-based smaller parties being sponsored by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as part of the ‘Great Ashanti Project’.
Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku, former General Secretary of United Front Party (UFP), who claimed to be the interim General Secretary, said the NLP was born out of the NPP’s crisis and was ready to tap into popular disenchantment of people with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to win the next polls.
Speaking in a radio interview in Kumasi, Nana Kusi-Poku stated that on Friday, November 13, 2015 founding members would announce the objectives and direction of the NLP.
According to him, those behind the NLP include two former Metropolitan Chief Executives as well as ex-Chief Executive Officers of some government agencies.
“I was shocked when they handed over to me the constitution and logo of the New Labour Party and asked me to be the interim General Secretary,” Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku told Hello Fm.
He indicated that he had presented all the necessary documents to the Electoral Commission (EC) to begin the registration process of the party.
Kusi-Poku said uplifting the welfare of the poor formed part of the NLP’s objectives, adding that the formation of the new party would bring hope to farmers and ordinary citizens of the country.
“The people are desperately looking for an alternative party to take up government, not merely an option of a lawless political party like NPP. The NLP members are simple breakaway members of NPP,” Listowell claimed.
Listowell gave a sketchy detail of the new party as he spent his energy on the NPP, describing it as a lawless party that is not fit to be given the power to rule.
