Tamale North constituency in the Northern Region is expected to be one of the keenly contested constituencies in today’s primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to elect parliamentary and presidential candidates for the 2016 polls.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Mohammed Abdul Salam, the Constituency Secretary and an aspirant contesting in Tamale North constituency, stated that he has served the party in various capacities and has a cordial relationship with the grassroots.
According to Mohammed Abdul Salam, ‘I should have been a Member of Parliament (MP) seeking re-election in 2012 but because moneycracy took the best part of the system, party delegates were bought and I lost by 27 votes but I did not see myself as the candidate who lost given the strength of the incumbent who distributed monies and motorbikes to delegates.
Tamale North constituency is expected to produce interesting but surprising results, as Mohammed Abdul Salam who is considered favorite is fiercely vying for the position with Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, the host of political current affairs programme – Alhaji and Alhaji, who is believed to have support from some bigwigs of the ruling party.
“I am worried because some bigwigs of the party think they can impose member of parliament on the people in the constituency. It will be very dangerous because if a party must have a future then it must nurture people from the grassroots. Just a few northern politicians groom younger ones to succeed them when they are exiting and I think that is most unfortunate,” he stated.
