Two persons who subjected a community police officer to severe beatings on his head on suspicion that he was a thief have been put before an Accra Circuit Court for the offence.

The suspects, Ishmael Daitey and Mohammed Issah, were put in a court presided over by M.E. Essandoh and charged with causing harm.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

They have been granted bail in the sum of GH¢5,000 with two sureties, while the case has been adjourned to December 21, 2015.

The facts of the case as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Maxwell Oppong, are that the complainant is a member of the Community Watchdog Committee.

He said on October 4, 2015 at about 11.30 pm, the complainant was on his way to join his colleagues to start their patrols when a person identified only as ‘Skirt’ appeared on the scene and raised an alarm, claiming that he (complainant) was a thief.

According to him, the two suspects with ‘Skirt’ and another pounced on the community police officer and subjected him to severe beatings on his head.

The prosecutor disclosed that they afterwards fled the scene and abandoned the suspect in a pool of blood, only for some Good Samaritans to rush to the complainant’s aid.

Furthermore, Chief Inspector Maxwell Oppong explained that the Good Samaritans took him to a hospital in Amanfrom, where he was treated and discharged.

He added that the matter was consequently reported to the police who managed to arrest the two suspects on October 10, 2015, while ‘Skirt’ and the other suspect managed to escape.

The prosecutor said the suspects were arraigned after police concluded investigations.
