The students taking their matriculation oath
Islamic University College Ghana (IUCG) will soon introduce four new academic programmes in its quest for excellence in tertiary education.
The new programmes are Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Studies to be run by the new Centre for Arabic Studies, Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood education, Diploma of Education in Early Childhood Education and Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for graduate teachers to be run by the Faculty of Education.
The three additional programmes will increase to eleven IUCG’s repertoire academic programmes, which includes Bachelor of Arts, Religious Studies, Bachelor of Business Administration with four options and Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies with three options.
This was disclosed at the 15th IUCG matriculation ceremony held for 252 students who were offered admission to the university.
Out of the 252 candidates, 164, representing 65 percent, were males and 106, representing 42 percent were females.
Nana Dr. Kobena G. Erbynn, Vice President Academic Affairs, delivering his speech, said IUCG is also in the process of approving new programmes in social sciences, computer science and management information system and law.
He said in the near future IUCG also intends request graduating students from other academic programmes, who wish to become professional teachers to stay on at IUCG and do one extra year to complete the (PGDE) programme.
“As part of the expected increase in academic and professional programmes and the corresponding increase in student intake, measures are being undertaken to ensure the expansion in academic and non-academic infrastructure on the IUCG campus,” he said.
President of IUCG, Dr. Mohsen Maarefi congratulated the new students on their admission to IUCG.
He said seeking knowledge is a sacred obligation for every Muslim because when they seek knowledge you can spread freedom and dignity, truth and justice.
Dr Maarefi said the university seeks to achieve not only academic excellence but moral uprightness of students.
“As in several places in the Quran knowledge is recommended together with morality,” he added.
He encouraged students to embrace new disciplines, challenges and activities as they chart their course over the next four years.
