A vote recount in the Sunyani East Constituency has confirmed the incumbent NPP MP, Ameyaw Cheremeh as having won the parliamentary primary there.

Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh extended his lead in the NPP’s parliamentary primary by an extra vote after the recount ordered by the Sunyani High Court.

The MP won the June 13, 2015 primary for the Constituency beating his rival, Mr. George Kumi, by just one vote.

Mr. Kumi felt the election was manipulated by some constituency executives and the Electoral Commission officials in favour of the incumbent.

He therefore contested the results in court and after hearing the parties, a Sunyani High Court ordered a recount which was done today.

The counting which took place at the Brong Ahafo Police Headquarters, saw Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh garnered 389 votes, one more than he previously had. George Kumi obtained 387 votes with two rejected ballots.

According to Precious, the EC discovered that one of the rejected ballots during the June 13 primary was actually a valid vote belonging to Mr. Ameyaw-Cheremeh.

The recount was done in the presence of lawyer for the petitioner, Twumasi Awuah, lawyer for the respondent Asumah Cheremeh and the lawyer for the NPP Nana Yaw Osei.

The victor, known for his calm posture, has yet to make any statement to the media but has been praising God for the confirmation.
