The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to develop boxing in the Western Region as part of its regional outreach programme to promote the sport nationwide.
To this end, the GBA is sourcing for funds and sponsors to support the regional outreach project to be executed in collaboration with the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation throughout the country.
Mr Peter Zwennes, national president of GBA, who disclosed this, therefore tasked the Central Regional GBA president, Twintor Walker, to assist in setting up a Western Regional Boxing Promotion Committee.
According to Mr Zwennes, the committee would among other things organize boxing tournaments and help recruit boxers, referees, judges and trainers as well as attract sponsors, managers and promoters for the game in the region.
He remarked that members of the committee would also register all those who are interested in becoming ring announcers, timekeepers, bell operators and ring girls.
“The committee will also collaborate with the Regional Sports Authority, Metropolitan Assemblies and Regional Coordinating Council to help revive boxing in the region,” he added.
He explained that the task given to Mr. Walker was just the continuation of the GBA’s work initiated in the Western Region by his predecessor, Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, when he (Zwennes) was the vice chairman.
Mr Zwennes described Mr. Walker as a visionary leader who was able to build a well-equipped secretariat in the Central Region and a gymnasium at the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium in Cape Coast.
“Walker established boxing clubs in some communities in the region including Kasoa, Winneba, Mankessim, Cape Coast, Elmina and Abura”, he noted.
On his part, Mr Walker indicated that he had since been making preliminary contacts with interested individuals, sports personalities and some media houses in Takoradi and would soon come out with the guidelines and policies to help initiate the task assigned him.
