Witchcraft Accusation Tops Crimes In Bongo

ASP Paul Ankan, Bongo Commander

The District Police Commander for Bongo in the Upper East Region, ASP Paul Ankan, after one month in office, has successfully prosecuted two persons for tagging and assaulting people they suspected to be witches or wizards.

The police commander has assured that he will expand his network of informants in the district, especially to get information about community members spearheading the tagging and assaulting of people they suspect to be witches or wizards.

Issues of witchcraft tagging and assault are still said to be widespread in the three Northern Regions. However, ASP Ankan has vowed never to tolerate the practice during his tenure as the Bongo police commander.

Assault cases topped the list of offences in the Bongo district in June this year, with witchcraft accusations, stealing, motor traffic offences, as well as illegal tree felling, emerging as the top five most prevalent offences in the district.

Speaking at a public sensitisation programme for residents and elders of the district, ASP Ankan declared zero tolerance for unlawful acts and practices in Bongo. According to him, modern day policing seeks to eliminate the bad perceptions civilians have about the Ghana Police Service and also work hand-in-hand with the public to achieve secured and peaceful communities across the country.

ASP Ankan was worried over the increasing spate of wrong parking of vehicles on roads, riding without helmet and non registration of motorbikes.

“The police, under my watch as the District Commander, will clampdown on such offenders relentlessly and make sure people comply… If residents and elders here believe that securing this district and its communities is very important, then the police will need your support to ensure this,” he added.

He suggested the formation of Community Watch Committees across the district to complement the police’s efforts at fighting crime in the district.

On his part, the Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Lemyaarum, commended the district police commander for initiating the public education programme to sensitise the people of the area, saying lessons learnt would go a long way to ensure peace and total security in the district.

Naba Lemyaarum appealed to his people, especially the youth, to offer the necessary support and information to the police for the effective discharge of their duties. He also tasked the police to be professional and civil in dealing with the public so as to gain their support and respect.

UPSA Holds Mass Graduation

UNIVERSITY OF Professional Studies (UPSA), one of the fastest growing public universities in Ghana, last Saturday awarded degree and diploma certificates to about 2,087 students who successfully completed their studies in various disciplines within the university’s 2014/2015 academic year.

Out of the total number who excelled in the disciplines ranging from Bachelor of Business Administration, Diploma in Management, Master in Accounting, among others, there were 335 diplomats, 1,366 undergraduate and 386 postgraduate students.

The seventh congregation coincided with the 50th anniversary celebrations of UPSA which is being marked under the theme: ‘Celebrating Our Past, Present, and Igniting Our Future with Scholarship and Professionalism’.

Chancellor of UPSA, Dr Kingsley Fletcher, in his welcome remarks, indicated that the university continues to focus on its core mandate by providing quality higher academic and professional education in business and other social science related disciplines.

According to him, UPSA has witnessed some major infrastructural development over the last decade that has enhanced its new learning environment.

Among the major developments taking place in the school, he said, “The construction of an ultra-modern library and research commons with a seating capacity of 1,500 students; a six-storey hostel facility accommodating 1,246 students; a new six-storey lecture facility and a new central administration building.”

He said the university has a student population of about 11, 300, adding that “we project that by 2017, we will grow to 15,000.”

Dr Fletcher added that “to this end, a number of strategic initiatives are being implemented for the next five years.”

The chancellor urged the graduands to use their education to impact positively on their societies by finding positive ways of creating employments for themselves and others.

He stressed that “always remember that you have the creative energy and ability to make your communities safer, healthier, more informed, more prosperous, less hungry.”

Recruitment Challenges

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Joshua Alabi, addressing the gathering, lamented that government’s embargo on recruitment has made it extremely difficult for the university to recruit new academic staff even though when compared to its current student population, its teaching staff strength is far from being adequate.

According to him, “The directive is so stringent to the extent that even separated staff cannot be replaced on the pay-roll.”

He added that “besides, in instances where we were bold to employ few people, we have had to pay their salaries from internally generated resources at the expense of equally needed physical development.”

The foregone notwithstanding, Prof Alabi announced that UPSA has put in place a number of measures to ensure its expansion in the near future.

According to him, there are “plans to acquire a 300-acre land off Accra – Dodowa road for future development by the university.”

No Negotiation! Govt Tells Striking Doctors

Haruna Iddrisu, Employment Minister

GOVERNMENT HAS pulled out from the negotiations with the striking doctors over the terms of their conditions of service.

According to the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, government cannot negotiate with the doctors while they are on strike.

“So long as they remain on strike, boycotting work whether partial or full and not resigning puts us in a difficulty in continuing negotiations,” he said.

Speaking on Joy FM, an Accra-based radio station, he said until the striking doctor’s return to work, it will be difficult to negotiate with them.

“Government will continue negotiations with the GMA only if they call off their strike action and come back to the negotiation table for us to dialogue further on putting closure to the whole subject of getting them a codified condition of service,” Mr Iddrisu said.

Last month, the GMA began a strike after government’s inability to reach a mutual agreement for their conditions of service.

Negotiations between the two parties have since ended in several deadlocks as both parties fail to agree on proposals relating specifically to the GMA.

General Secretary of the GMA, Dr Frank Serebour, on the other hand said the members of the association will not return to work until the document containing their conditions of service have been agreed upon and signed by the two groups.

He said this was because the decision taken by the association was in consensus with its members, adding that when it becomes necessary for a meeting to be called based on the new development the association would do that.

“As we speak general assembly is saying that they will strike because there is a conditional clause attached to it and that it until we sign negotiated conditions of service we will strike,” he said.

Government is, however, planning to bring out an elaborate emergency plan for the health sector to deal with the absence of the doctors from public hospitals.

Reports emanating from Kpando in the Volta Region indicate that a fight nearly ensued between Heart of Lions’ Randy Abbey and Aduana Stars Operations Manager George Gyau.

The two nearly exchanged blows following Randy Abbey’s alleged verbal attacks on the visiting official, referring to the Aduana man as stupid, when the latter suspected foul play in officiating and expressed concern.

“He told me I am stupid when I questioned the referee and told Randy if he watches what was happening unconcerned then Ghana football will suffer.

“He told me in the face that I am stupid, which I didn’t take lightly because I have a son who is over 30years. When we got to our hotel, he instructed his body guard known as Cyborg to assault me.

“But you know we Aduanas are not that soft. We are aggressive so my boys were around to intervene. I would have dealt with him and consequently faced him squarely.

“Fighting has no formular, and like the Biblical David and Goliath story, I would have surprised them. He also told me I am an employee.

“What the referee did was awful, he ignored a clear penalty going for us. We equalized and when my players were going to celebrate, he disallowed it,” the 58-year-old added.

Attempts to reach the Communications Directorate of Lions via telephone was unsuccessful.

‘Blame Herbert Addo For Hearts Woes’

Former Police Service Sports Director Twumasi Ankrah has launched a scathing verbal attack on former Hearts of Oak trainer Herbert Addo, blaming the coach for the club’s current status on the league standings.

He indicated that the coach’s uninspiring performance in the first few league games is what led to the team’s current position in the First Capital Plus Premier League.

The tough-talking sports director described Hearts’ position as delicate, and one which calls for serious attention before things get out of hand.

“I blame the first coach before this one -Herbert- for Hearts’ current problems. He messed up in the first few games, that is why they are where they find themselves now,” he said on Happy FM.

He added: “Hearts’ situation is extremely delicate and as we say in the Akan parlance, ‘ay3 huhuu hu’. They have to win their last two games against Chelsea and WAFA.

“It will be tough against Chelsea because they also want to win the title,” he added.

Hearts are second from bottom on the league standings counting on hope to survive relegation with two games to go.

Stand-in coach Edward Ansah and Turkish trainer Vanli Can, are combining forces technically in an effort to save the club since the exit of Addo.

Ghana defender Abdul Baba Rahman has been handed jersey number 17 at Chelsea after completing a five-year move worth £17 million from German side Augsburg on Sunday.

Baba became Chelsea’s third signing of the summer after passing medicals in Paris on Friday and inking a long-term deal to join Radamel Falcao and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The Black Stars left-back gets to wear the jersey number previously used by Eden Hazard, Jose Bosingwa and Albert Ferrer, Scott Minto and Danny Granville. It was worn last season by Egyptian international Mohamed Salah.

The former Asante Kotoko defender has spoken of his delight to switch to the Stamford Bridge where his countryman Michael Essien earned international fame with his commanding midfield displays.

“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to train with my new team-mates. I am very much looking forward to working with them and Mr Mourinho. I am also looking forward to having the opportunity to meet the fans as soon as possible,” he told Chelsea FC.

Augsburg have signed Ghanaian international defender Daniel Opare to replace Rahman at Augsburg.

Korean Envoy Lauds Ghana Golf

H.E. Lyeo Woon-Ki

Combining sports with ambassadorial duties is no mean task; but that cannot be said for H.E. Lyeo Woon-Ki, the Korean Ambassador to Ghana.

To him, his love for sports, particularly golf and football, makes him more effective in his duties at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.

Characteristically, the nature of his job has sent him to countless countries where he has played key roles in the game of golf including Ireland, the home of golf.

And although Ghana ranks lowest among all the countries he has worked in as an envoy, his association with the sport in his close to a year’s stay in the country shows that given the needed push, golf will take Ghana to places.

He revealed in an interview at his Cantonment office that so far it is the refurbished Achimota Golf Club that meets international standards, calling on government and corporate Ghana to pull the other clubs along the same line.

The Korean Ambassador featured prominently in the MOBA-SANTA annual golf competition at the Achimota Club a few weeks ago.

“Golf has a huge potential to sell Ghana to the outside world, but it is still under-developed except for the Achimota Club. Achimota is catching up and I hope government and the public sector will help raise the other clubs to an appreciable or international standard,” said H.E. Woon-Ki.

The Korean Envoy, who has a huge hall decorated with the many medals and trophies he has lifted in major and minor golf competitions, is also a key midfielder of the Foreign Mission Football team, back home (Korea).

He is married to Yeonhee Chang Lyeo with whom he has two children, namely Joon-Ku Lyeo, a top security expert at the Emory University Business School, Atlanta, USA and Lydia Kyungon of the Iwha Women’s University Pharmacy School.

Same Shame, Again

$

I am so disappointed in where we are as a country, my mind has switched to far out places where the oceans are more tranquil, the breeze more soothing and the food divine and enticing.  Where lobster over a grill is served with a glass of medium sweet white wine and music tinkles in the background without jarring your senses and disturbing the taste buds.  The women are classily clad showing off parts that guarantee a night of near perfect ecstasy, because it is the right ambience to a tasty end.

Where the night is lit all the time, the air conditioning runs twenty-four hours and the water is clean, fresh and flowing all the time; the pool shimmers with cool water and a gentle breeze invites you to ever so elegantly dip yourself into the water, energizing your body for another tomorrow.

Because this is what they have in Singapore.  Why can’t I have it in Ghana?  Why should my life remain so miserable and fraught with so many blunders and blanks, that I am constantly thinking back to the good times rather than looking beyond my horizons and dreaming of a more improved Ghana?

But my mood moved down gear, a mild depression engulfing my thoughts and preventing me from adding more vim to my everyday increasing commitments.  I am tired and I am struggling to keep a pace commensurate with my abilities.

The system is beating me down.

I want a one-term leader; that leader who will disregard all the political shenanigans, take on the responsibility and just do what is obviously right to do.  I want to see a leader, determined that once and for all, this country with development opportunity and resource potential can beat the tag of a nation, pregnant with black that will forever depend on outside influence to arrive at Nirvana.  Cut the umbilical cord of servitude and once and for all gestate us past the stigma of “Africa challenged despite all its resources”.

How much longer are we going to plead stupid, before we gather steam and get to that place where we can sit at the table of nation-changers and watch as people listen to our success story?

I am looking for any politician who can, with hand on heart or up to the sky in supplication to whatever they believe, tell me where lies their proud story of what they have achieved in this Ghana.  Well after five decades and a half, we are still wallowing in the fantasy of minor progress.

We have put up with the yoke of politicians telling us they have answers to what needs to be done to move us forward to an economic revolution, that they and them alone have the key to unlock our poverty.  Not today, but soon.  And see where we are.  Stuck in a country where we cannot even clean our own filth and drink clean water from our pipes.

As I watched and listened to the fifty-year Singapore success story all week, I cried silently, that not a single political decision in this country has moved us past the neo-colonialist dishonor from which we are yet to rise.

This week, the Government is at war with the Ghana Medical Association.  Over what?  A proposal for negotiation in 2016.  Several people have already lost their lives and our President with blood on his hands, just as culpable as the doctors, thinks this is the time to demonstrate budget ignorance and play hardball.  And yet we have no written conditions of service for these doctors in twenty-three years.

Efo Kwasi, a spiritualist from Kwapong in the Asunafo South District in Brong Ahafo was burnt to death by the youth of the town.  He stabbed and killed Kwaku Donkor, a tri-cyclist over negotiations for a fare from a farm.  I am speculating that the amount would not have exceeded GH¢100.  In the process, Kwame Wiafe was stray-bulleted to meet his maker from warning shots by the police.  Kwame Kabore was also critically injured in the melee, all these from a simple commercial disagreement.  Two days of violence.

In Tuobodom in the Techiman area, famous for the song that gave them fame, they epoched the song and fought to death over an alleged story of misplaced “shitting” in a geographical area.  So far, nine persons dead; Over? Dare I say it?  We are yet to hear the real truth, but not different from what went down in Bimbilla a few times ago from Akomfem and T-shirts.

In Nima, Ayawaso East in the Ga Metropolis, NDC youth threatened to cause mayhem to their Regional Executives for not providing them adequate reward for effort.  Refusing to register themselves for the impending congress in November, they looked for Chair Mr. Ade Coker, who at that time was sitting in a studio next to me on Citifm, making cogent contribution to the Big Issue, which saved him some embarrassment, I suppose.

The cedi is tumbling again, causing much uncertainty in the forex market and pushing speculators to do exactly what the Central Bank says it is solving since 1965 when we established our own currency, because we said we could manage it better.  The Central Bank does not know how the cedi bops up and down like “tonga”.  No clue, and yet we pay them month after year without fail.  Their boss is still in charge, deeply mucked in their failure.

And then the Ga State muted my whole Homowo this year, uncertainty over who rules the State.  I am half-Ga, unashamedly so, but my peeps are just not on top of the hierarchy.  Trying to explain which stool you belong to and where your ancestry is derived has never been a problem.  I don’t think it even bothers the mainstream Ga person, whether their stool rules the State.

It is the traditional stool politicians, whose interests are served because of land money and old scores that must be settled at all costs, and who perpetuate the cyclical stupidity of disrupting the festival for impact.

This year, we all read the news, sighed a big one and went ahead to drink more beer and eat more “kpokpoi” in defiance of the ignorant history we can’t trace to ensure perpetuity.

The perks of being a Ga chief are not clear to me.  Prestige, honor?  The State is seen as the poor contributors in the Regional House of Chiefs and if after all these years the House of Chiefs cannot find a solution to Ga hegemony what can I say or even do?

These are issues that dwell in our society and are nothing to be proud of.  They have been there for as long as I can remember.  When will we move from this cultural and social inertia into a more promising future for the people of Ghana?

I want a nation of meaning; a nation of excellence, a nation where my pride will swell my heart and elevate me to a place of such loft that I can’t explain what brought me to that point.

I have been there before, in 2007, at the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC, we celebrated fifty years of independence and to the tune of the National Anthem and Pat Thomas.  I believed we had finally turned the corner and Ghana would look back no more.

We had gold, cocoa, other exportable produce and now oil had come to add to our fortunes ahead of a dawning age of democracy, entrenching with each election.

But now what?  The same political gridlock, the same lying teams of persons, the same lies of pursuing a never reachable wealth and the same rhetoric that they have a solution and it will be a matter of time.

Shame on us, shame on all politicians.  None exempted in my pain this week.  The solutions are obvious, the “non-plementers” obvious for their inability to do.

Ghana, Aha a yε din papa.  Alius atrox week advenio. Another terrible week to come!

We Are Also Ready To Go And Work In Other Countries – Doctors

Dr Juctice Yankson

Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has stated that striking doctors will not be intimidated by threats from government to ‘sack them’.

Dr Juctice Yankson said government has taken doctors in the country for granted by turning them into slaves instead of employees. “Our employer should treat us as real employees and not slaves because we will just not be intimidated by any minister or any government official.

We are not fighting with anyone but we are fighting for is our conditions of service and nothing more” he stated on Asempa fm Tuesday. Ghanaian doctors are on an indefinite strike over government’s inability to agree on their conditions of service. They have given the government two more weeks to address their concerns or be faced with a complete withdrawal of their services from public hospitals.

The Health Minister Alex Segbefia, at a press conference Tuesday called on the doctors to return to the negotiation table to get their grievances sorted.

He said refusal by these public sector doctors to report to work Thursday will be considered to have violated the Labour Act.

“Effect Thursday August 20, all members of the GMA who have not reported and assumed full duty shall be considered as being on strike and in clear breach of the Labour act” he said.

But Dr. Yankson who called the bluff of government’s call dared government to go ahead and sack the striking doctors since other countries are calling on them “to give us a better conditions of service”.

“Intimidation and threats will not solve the issue. In fact, nobody is doing us a favour, and so the employer should also understand and heed to our call. After all, other countries around the globe are willing to work with us and we also ready to go”.

He went on to say that if government is finding it difficult to get them their conditions of service, they should provide the striking doctor’s conditions of service meant for members of the Bank of Ghana.

“If they want the matter to be resolved, just give us BOG’s condition of service and the situation will be resolved’ he indicated.

Commenting on the 500 patients who are reportedly dead as a result of the strike action, the GMA Deputy General Secretary of opined that it’s rather a failure on the side of the government.

“If that report is nothing to go by, then it means government could not handle issues of health care in the country if indeed they claim they are putting measures in place to curtail deaths amidst our strike action.

He however rubbished claims that over 148 doctors voted for the strike to be rescinded.

“It is mere propaganda to say 148 doctors voted for the strike to be called off. It’s just untrue and I think these lies have gone on for quiet too long”.

Dr. Yankson continued that “we the leaders of the GMA, tried as much as possible to manage the situation by bringing a counter motion to restore emergency cases which was later withdrawn” he asserted.

Dr Papa Kwasi Nduom

Businessman and Founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Papa Kwasi Nduom, has challenged the President, John Mahama, to a debate on how to make Ghana “great and strong” and its people prosperous.

In a Facebook post Monday, Dr Nduom said the debate would also focus on how best to implement free compulsory universal education from kindergarten to senior high school.

The PPP Founder said he was open to facing the President in the debate in 2015.

See Dr Nduom’s FB post below:

“I have a request to make. I want a one on one debate between me Papa Kwesi Nduom and President John Dramani Mahama on what to do to make Ghana great and strong and its people prosperous. This debate should also cover free, compulsory universal education from kindergarten to senior high school, solving ‘dum so’, election of MMDCEs, solving the corruption problem and job creation.

I don’t want this to become entangled with election politics. So it is better done in 2015. Anytime, anywhere. Any promoters?”

Striking Ghanaian doctors could face severe sanctions from government if they do not resume work by Thursday, August 20.

According to Health minister Alex Segbefia, all public sector doctors who do not report to work Thursday will be considered to have violated the Labour Act.

“Effect Thursday August 20, all members of the GMA who have not reported and assumed full duty shall be considered as being on strike and in clear breach of the Labour act.

“Heads of facilities are also requested to provide me weekly updates of which health workers are working,” the former deputy defense minister stated at a news conference in Accra Tuesday.

He added: “There are some reports of threats and some intimidation of doctors who wish to work. This is their rights and any such act is a criminal offence”.

Ghanaian doctors are on an indefinite strike over government’s inability to agree on their conditions of service. They have given the government two more weeks to address their concerns or be faced with a complete withdrawal of their services from public hospitals.

Evidence Shows Voters Register Is ‘Flawed’ – Nana Addo

Nana Akufo-Addo

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is convinced that the Electoral Commission must compile a new and credible voters’ register before the 2016 elections because the evidence available to the party shows the current register is flawed.

At a press conference organised by the party on Tuesday, Nana Addo said, that should be the “first step in ensuring we have transparent elections.”

According to him, the party has had to make an official position on the matter because they care “deeply for our democracy,” and that their actions are to “ensure a peaceful Ghana.”

“Attached to our message to the EC this morning was the documented evidence supporting our case for a new register. We are making this public statement because we believe we owe it as a duty to the Ghanaian people to let them know and understand why we are making this call to the EC,” he said.

Nana Addo said the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Progessive People’s Party (PPP) and some religious organisations have also raised concerns about the current register.

He was speaking ahead of a presentation by the party’s vice presidential candidate, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia’s to prove his claims that the voters’ register has been compromised.

Dr Bawumia said the party has presented their case for a new voters’ register to the EC. According to him, the 25% increase in the voters’ register in 2008 and 2012 is abnormally high.

“During the 2012 election cycle, the EC presented different figures for total number of registered voters,” he said.

According to him, there is a loop hole with the use of NHIS card by foreigners to register as voters. “Brong-Ahafo and Volta Region recorded high numbers during the special registration for NHIS cards,” he said.

A delegation from Ghana Post Company Limited led by Nii Tackie-Komme, has presented an amount of GH¢5,000.00 and assorted drinks to the Ga Mantse, Boni Nii Tackie Adama Lastse II, at his palace.

The donation, which was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, was to support the paramount chief and his subjects in celebrating this year’s Homowo festival.

Mr. Eric Yao, Managing Director of Ghana Post who presented the items, said Ghana Post had been with the people for centuries and that donating towards the celebration was a move in the right direction. “This is not the first time the company is living up to such responsibility; and will not be the last,” he assured.

According to him, his outfit is poised to become one of the top companies to meet the needs of its cherished customers and also respond to more social demands as the fortunes of the company improve.

In his response, the Ga Mantse expressed appreciation for the gesture and assured the management of the company that he would continue to pray for it (Ghana Post) to grow from strength to strength.

Boni Nii Tackie Adama Lastse II acknowledged the difficult situation in which Ghana Post finds itself, referring to the stiff competition and the rise in internet usage instead of sending mails by post.

That notwithstanding, he urged management of the company to be resolute and attract more businesses.

Mr Tackie-Komme, member of the Ghana Post Board of Directors, informed the Ga Mantse and his elders that Ghana Post had and still attracting other businesses – from the financial services to real estate management – so that it could survive the competition.

Woman Roasts Lover’s Manhood

One man learnt a very valuable lesson after cheating on his girlfriend: If you’re going to be unfaithful, don’t leave your appendages vulnerable to a fiery attack.

After finding out that her man had slept with her co-worker, an unknown woman decided to get payback  against the very body part he had strayed with.

While he was sleeping, she sneaked up on him, with a camera running, and set the underwear he was wearing on fire.

In a 30-second clip shared by Elite Daily, the man is seen fast asleep in a white bed wearing just underwear and a pair of high socks.

A woman, presumably his girlfriend or wife, whose face cannot be seen, carefully and quietly removes the blanket that is partially covering him.

She then opens a bottle of nail polish remover and slowly pours some of the liquid over the groin area of his underwear.

With a long lighter, she sets the front of his underwear on fire. It only burns for about a second before her boyfriend jolts awake, screaming and batting at the flames.

“You cheating on me with my f***ing co-worker, you didn’t think I was gonna find out?” she is heard saying as he rolls over and moans, holding his crotch.

“Get your s*** and get the f*** out,” she says, as he falls off the bed and stumbles off camera.

She’s certainly not the first scorned woman whose lover has faced hell this year. In April, a Japanese woman got revenge on her cheating boyfriend by destroying thousands of dollars worth of technology.

Furious over his infidelity, she tossed his iMac desktop computer, Mac laptop, iPhone, iPad, and other gadgets into a bathtub full of water.

The heartbroken man then shared images of his destroyed Apple collection on Twitter.

Also, in February pictures surfaced online showing an Audi R8 V, which can cost upwards of $115,900, completely torn apart from the inside out.

Dalex Finance Introduces SWIFT

Ken Thompson speaking with the media

Dalex Finance has introduced a new savings and investment scheme called ‘Safe Wise Investments for Tomorrow’ (SWIFT) onto the financial market.

The product provides a convenient way for ordinary Ghanaians to save using their mobile money accounts.

The SWIFT contribution could be any amount starting from GHȼ1.00 and could be made through more than 20,000 points, including mobile money agents, post offices and bank branches in addition to unlimited convenience of using mobile phones.

The flexible, high-earning and convenient micro-investment product is accessed and managed on the mobile phone with the mobile number acting as the investment account number of the customer.

Ken Thompson, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dalex Finance, said the product was created principally to stimulate the savings and investment culture among Ghanaians for a better future.

“SWIFT is not only a contributory system that allows people to save from the little money they earn but also provides them an easy way of saving using their mobile phones,” he said.

Mr. Thompson said the mobile-money platform provides a very convenient mode of transaction for users, hence the decision by Dalex to use that medium, explaining that an account holder’s mobile phone number becomes the individual’s account number.

“SWIFT invests the contributions made in any 30-day period and will pay a competitive compound interest from month to month until the maturity of the investment,” he said.
Mr. Thompson advised Ghanaians not to give monies to agents who might come to them to claim their contributions.
He said that as a financial company, which has been rated 16 on the Ghana Club 100, Dalex Finance would provide maximum security for their investments, saying the contributors’ investments are kept by well established financial institutions regulated by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Dr Kwesi Botchwey, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, in his keynote address, expressed the hope that Dalex SWIFT would help bring development to the doorsteps of the poor and promote the culture of savings.

The event is expected to be held two to three times a year.

Popular Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has said it is not true the plot of his upcoming one-cast movie, Last Night, was inspired by the true life story of a popular Ghanaian radio presenter who deals in drugs.

“I don’t even know any Ghanaian presenter who deals in drugs. It is not about anyone. It is just something out of place from nowhere,” he told a section of the Ghanaian media and explained he had no idea such characters existed in Ghana’s radio industry.

Prince David Osei was speaking at the upcoming movie’s press conference at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Accra ahead of a grand premiere on Friday, August 21 at the Silverbird Cinemas.

Present was popular actress Yvonne Nelson.

The movie is a psychological thriller about the character ‘Bright Mensah’, a radio presenter and drug dealer.

He is a dodgy guy who uses his radio programme, ‘Truth and Consequence’, as a front for his drug trade.

There were speculations that the movie could be about a particular radio presenter in Ghana. But Prince David Osei has denied the speculations.

According to him, he wanted to use the movie to educate students about the harmful effects of using hard drugs.

“I will take up the issue of drug usage and use my movie as a tool to go to schools to sensitise students about the harmful effects of drug usage. So it is not just about the premiere,” he added on Friday.

Prince David joins the league of Ghanaian screen actors-turned-producers.

But he is the first to produce a one-cast movie in Africa. He said his next movie might be Ghana’s silent movie.

The movie, directed by Andy Boyo, was shot with crew from South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana.

Last Night will be released from the stables of David’s PDO Production coming Friday. Its premiere at the Silverbird Cinemas would kick-start a series of similar events on the African continent and beyond.

After almost three years of construction, the first phase of construction on the permanent campus for the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) at Green Valley, a suburb of Sokode-Lokoe near Ho, is ready for use.

The completed facility includes the central administration block and facilities for the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences.

These facilities are lecture halls, laboratories, auditorium and residential facilities for students and staff.

The edifice is one of the five schools currently being operated by UHAS. Other schools yet to be started by the university are the School of Pharmacy, School of Sports and Exercise Medicine, School of Dentistry, Institute of Medical Education and Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

Speaking at a brief handing over ceremony, the Volta Regional Minister, Helen Adwoa Ntoso, praised the Chinese Government for funding the project. She also commended the contractors, China Yanjian Group Company, for executing the job to perfection.

The minister received the keys from the contractors on behalf of government and announced that President John Dramani Mahama would soon commission the facility officially for the university to fully occupy and use it.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Edwin Kwame Wiredu, who received the keys to the facility on behalf of the university from the minister, was grateful to the Governments of Ghana and China for the project and pledged that the facility would be put to good use.

He also noted that the facility is a great source of motivation for the university to strive hard to achieve higher laurels and compete effectively with other major universities in the world.

Professor Wiredu was hopeful that the Hohoe campus of the university, which houses the School of Public Health, would also see some work on its permanent site at Fodome.

The university which started with 155 students in 2012 currently has a total student population of about 1,009, excluding yet-to-be admitted students for the coming academic year. It also started its sandwich programme a few months ago and emerged winner in a recent quiz competition involving five other older tertiary institutions, namely, the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, College of Health, Kintampo and the Premier School of Medical Laboratory Technology. The competition was organised by the National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG).

In 2013 UHAS came second out of 32 institutions that took part in the fourth edition of TV Africa’s ‘Knowing Africa’ competition.

The young university has also been certified by the World Health Organisation to lead the Ebola Vaccine Trials in Ghana.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Fred Newton Binka, the Ebola trial by UHAS has placed UHAS on the world map and reinforces the vision of the school to become a leading research and practical-based science institution in the world.
