Kwesi Appiah

The Normalisation Committee (NC) of the Ghana Football Association is unwilling to approve Kwesi Appiah’s decision to sack his backroom staff following Ghana’s disappointing showing at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Ghanasoccernet.com can report.

In his post-AFCON report, the Black Stars trainer stated he would not like to continue working with assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko, team manager Stephen Appiah, goalkeeper’s trainer Richard Kingston and team doctor Najau Issah.

In the report, Kwesi Appiah suggested Charles Kwabla Akonnor, Sabahn Quaye, Najau Issah and Dr. Prince Pambo as replacements for respective positions.

Appiah presented NC with the report for one week now but they are unwilling to approve his request for various reasons.

However, NC would consider the issue again on Thursday.

The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA) has lauded drivers of Dangote Cement Ghana Limited for strictly adhering to safety rules while driving on roads in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the Authority, it has had several reports from police about some companies’ drivers drive recklessly.

However, it says, there has not been a single report of reckless driving on the part of Dangote Cement Ghana’s drivers.

Daniel Adjei Amoah, Technical Officer of DVLA Tema Branch, made this known at a training session organized for the company’s drivers at its plant in Tema on Thursday, October 3, 2019, as part of its Sustainability Week Celebration for this year.

“I have never heard anything about Dangote Drivers; I have heard about so many accidents from several companies drivers,” he said, as he commenced the training.

“Dangote has quiet a good record on the road and I think Dangote should keep it up,” he urged.

Several activities including a health talk on depression and stress, dental and eye screening, donation of cement, clean up exercise and school visit, are part of the celebration.

The Sustainability Week Celebration is being observed across subsidiaries of the Dangote Group worldwide.

It seeks to drum home the need for the company to continue to operate in a sustainable manner and impact communities positively.

Mr. Adjei Amoah encouraged the drivers from various departments to remain focused while driving and never to imitate other drivers who are so aggressive on the roads, saying “be free, have patient on the road. If you don’t have patient on the road, you cannot be a good driver.”

He walked them through a series of safety rules on the road.

He stated that “driving is a thinking-right skill.”

Earlier, Managing Director (MD) of Dangote Cement Ghana Limited, Brice Houeto observed the need for zero accident.

General Manager of Transport, Dangote Cement Ghana Limited, Lawal Mohammed Duze Ibrahim, in his opening remarks at the training session, stated that the training was to ensure that the drivers draw impacts from their actions on communities.

Leave Us Alone; We’re Not Sabotaging You – Parliament To Amidu

Prof. Mike Ocquaye – Speaker of Parliament

Ghana’s Parliament has denied allegations by the Special Prosecutor, Martin Alamisi Amidu, that the chamber is frustrating his efforts to prosecute Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central.

Parliament, in a statement, said: “Contrary to these allegations, Parliament would like to state that it is not seeking to sabotage the work of the Special Prosecutor nor any law enforcement agency.

“Indeed, our engagement with the Special Prosecutor was a follow-up to a letter dated the 23rd May 20I9, which he had written to the Speaker, whereby Mr Amidu requested the release of the Hon. Mahama Ayariga to be arraigned at the High Court in Accra on 4 June 2019.

“Parliament, on 31 May 2019, wrote to the Special Prosecutor recognising the role of the latter in the fight against corruption. Parliament invited the Special Prosecutor for further discussions on the matter.

“According to the letter, the meeting was to ‘dialogue with your high office as to how your Office and the Court could be availed of Hon. Ayariga for arraignment before Court with due regard to his privileges, the presumption of innocence and in a manner which will enable him to continue to efficiently perform his Parliamentary duties’”.

“At the said meeting, the Special Prosecutor’s attention was drawn to Articles 117, I 18 (I) and 122 of the 1992 Constitution which provide that:

117: Civil or criminal coming from any court or place out of Parliament shall not be served on, or executed in relation to the Speaker or a member or the Clerk to Parliament while he is on his way to, attending at or returning from, any proceedings of parliament.

118 (1): Neither the Speaker nor a member of, nor the Clerk to Parliament shall be compelled while attending Parliament to appear as a witness in any court of place out of parliament.

112: an act or omission which obstructs or impedes parliament in the performance of its functions or which obstructs or impedes a member or officer of parliament in the discharge of his duties or affronts the dignity of Parliament or which tends either directly or indirectly to produce that result, is contempt of parliament”.

“It is clear from the outset that the Special Prosecutor knew the purpose of the meeting and he elected to come. Indeed, he was accompanied by an official from his outfit at an open meeting in the Speaker’s Conference Room, with the Speaker, the Majority and Minority Leaders, the Ranking Member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, and the Clerk to Parliament.

“To suggest, therefore, that the Speaker had a private meeting to get him to approach the prosecution wrongfully is unfounded. During the meeting, the Speaker emphasised that MPs are not above the law.

“However, there was the need to respect their privileges as provided for in the 1992 Constitution. The Special Prosecutor, however, differed with this viewpoint and the meeting ended. A subsequent letter of appreciation was sent to the Special Prosecutor by the Speaker which communication made reference to his differing viewpoint on that matter.

“It is pertinent to recount that at the meeting, Parliament suggested to the Special Prosecutor that it was not in any way saying that an MP could not be prosecuted. But just as it happened in the trial of Hon. Dan Abodakpi, the MP could be tried on Mondays. In addition, it was suggested that the long three-month vacation was coming soon (August to October) and the MP could be tried day to day. Certainly, the Special Prosecutor did not see the benefit of the suggestion to use the vacation time in Parliament to do a trial. The time is almost gone and the Prosecutor has done nothing.

“Parliament wants to state categorically that it co-operated with the Special Prosecutor during the investigation stage of the case in question. Indeed, Parliament has in the past, collaborated with other law enforcement agencies in similar matters as the Commissioner of Police and Director of the Criminal Investigation Department will testify. As the lawmaking arm of government, Parliament will under no circumstance attempt to break the laws of Ghana.

“The Special Prosecutor should not draw Parliament into his own issues at all.”

NAPO Won’t Introduce ‘Abominable’ CSE Programme – KT Hammond

KT Hammond

Member of Parliament for Adansi-Asokwa, KT Hammond has registered his displeasure over the controversial Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) which he considers abominable.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, he was however of the hope that government through the Education Ministry will not introduce such programme in the country’s educational system.

There is intense pressure on the Ministry of Education and the GES to withdraw the program which critics consider as a subtle attempt to sexualize children and indoctrinate them into embracing homosexuality as a normal way of life.

“He [Education Minister] is absolutely sane. He wouldn’t dream of introducing anything that is abominable in this country. Definitely not NPP government and certainly not my nephew, NAPO. If it is ever the case that he (Matthew Opoku Prempeh) has come anywhere near it, I’m not sure that I intend talking to him again or dealing with him drastically.”

Mr. Hammond had in an earlier interview with a local radio station said they will burn down Parliament House should government implement the CSE programme in basic schools.

“If this CSE is brought to Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament Aaron Mike Oquaye will burn the Parliament, the Majority Leader will run into the bush and die there, the Minority Leader will strip naked and jump into the sea,” he said.

There have also been conflicting reports and denials of the inclusion of the CSE in the 2019 curriculum by the Education Ministry and the GES.

But checks indicate that CSE is actually included in the curriculum.

In 2018, the Minister for Finance Ken Ofori-Atta presented the 2019 budget statement and economic policy of government where he hinted of the CSE.

Mr. Speaker, the National Population Council (NPC) in collaboration with other stakeholders developed guidelines on Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) for incorporation into the national education curriculum. The Council reviewed policies that impose structural barriers to condom use in Ghana as part of efforts to effectively implement the National Condom Strategy, (2016-2020) in line with SDG 3.7,” he read from the budget statement.

Organizations/Religious Position on the CSE

A number of organisations and persons have also condemned the supposed inclusion of the CSE in basic education curriculum.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) branded the controversial Comprehensive Sexuality Education program as “Comprehensive Satanic Engagement.”

GPCC on Thursday demanded the withdrawal of the programme in its entirety from the Ghana Education Service (GES) curriculum for basic schools.

Former President John Mahama added his voice to the many calls on government to ditch the proposed Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) guidelines reportedly planned to be included in the new basic education curriculum.

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) had also questioned the basis for the introduction of Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) by the Ghana Education Service.

Pricing God’s Blessings Is Zeal Without Knowledge – Duncan-Williams

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams seen as the father of the Charismatic movement in Ghana has cautioned pastors and church leaders against monetising the gospel.

In an interview with Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he explained that the practice in the church where pastors always solicit for a specific amount of money from their members in exchange for God’s blessings is “zeal without knowledge.”

The Founder of Action Chapel International explained although the Bible has examples for people who gave specific offerings and got blessed, it is not right for church leaders to always tie blessings to specific donations.

“There will always be people presenting truth or doctrine without much wisdom,” he told host Daniel Dadzie.

He encouraged church leaders to open up to their members whenever the church faces a financial need. They can then ask the members to support by donating to the cause, the Christian leader said.

“But to say that give a thousand and God will blessing you,” he said is not the best way to present the gospel.

Duncan-Williams explained there are principles to financial prosperity in the kingdom of God.

“People think that if I fast and pray I will get money, No”, he said and explained fasting and prayer brings power.

“You will not be blessed financial if you are not a giver,” he said. Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams said church leaders should discourage the practice of equating huge offerings to huge blessings.

“God will bless you even if you give one cedi,” he said and explained, “it is not the amount, it is what you can afford and where your faith is.”

Nicholas Duncan-Williams said there will always be some level of immaturity and a lack of wisdom in the church and asked for some allowance for Christians leaders to grow and change their ways as they mature.

The archbishop said he has had to make changes in his own way of life and style as he grows in Christ.

President Akufo Addo

President Akufo Addo has charged the first Governing Board of the newly established Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) to use the financial resources entrusted to them to raise indegenious players in the mining sector which has hitherto been dominated by international corporations.

Addressing the nine (9) member Governing Board at the Jubilee House after administering the Oaths of Office and Secrecy to them, Akufo-Addo said after a century of mining in Ghana, there was no significant local Ghanaian player in the industry and this, he indicated, was not good enough.

“Hopefully this fund, when properly managed and selectively invested, will over the period of time erase that image and give us a new architecture in the mining industry which includes significant Ghanaian players,” the President said in his address.

“It shouldn’t be the case that Newmount, Anglo gold Ashanti and all these others are the only players in the Ghanaian industry.”

Akufo-Addo on the management of the fund, drew the attention of the Governing Board to the fact that they have a fiduciary relationship with the fund and that they hold the fund in trust for the people of Ghana.

“These monies belong to the people of Ghana and they are counting on you to use it judiciously, prudently and also with some imagination,” President Akufo Addo indicated. “The operation of this fund could be a very critical step in the development and transformation of our economy.”

George Mireku Duker, the Chairman of the Governing Board in his response to the charge of the President noted that they are not going to disappoint the President having reposed his confidence in them by appointing them to the board.

“South Africa for example, has developed because the mining companies there are owned by South Africans. Ghanaians, we are lacking this perspective and that is why this, your vision, to ensure that the local content aspect of this field is really moved by this board and we are going to go by that charge,” Mr. Duker said.

The members of the Governing Board are George Mireku Duker, Chairman; Hon Yaw Baah, Chief Executive Officer of the MIIF; Mrs. Felicia Ashley, Representative of the Ministry of Finance; Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Mr. Amiishadai Owusu – Amoah, the Commissioner for Domestic Tax Revenue Division of GRA; Ms Naana Dufie Addo, President’s nominee; Kow Essuman, President’s nominee, and Mrs. Antoinette Kwofie, also a nominee of the President. The ninth member who is supposed to be a representative of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is yet to be appointed.

According to the Minerals and Income Investment Fund Act, 218, (Act 978), the Act is to establish a fund to manage the equity interests of the Republic of Ghana in mining companies, to receive mineral royalties and other related income due the Republic from mining operations, to provide for the management and investment of the assets of the fund and for related matters. The Act was assented to by the President on the 3rd of December, 2018, after it was passed into law by Parliament.

President Nana Akufo Addo

President Nana Akufo Addo is set to respond to controversy surrounding supposed plans to introduce Comprehensive Sexuality Education in public schools which has been condemned as “satanic”

The Information minister took to Twitter to announce the event but did not state the day.

“President @NAkufoAddo will this wknd address faith based organizations on the fears that pro LGBTQ teachings will soon find expression in Ghana’s schools. He will bring clarity on the govts position on the matter.”

The Comprehensive Sexuality Education is believed by many a subtle conditioning of pupils to explore lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) lifestyles.

Parents and religious bodies have expressed outrage after it emerged the Ghana Education Service has guidelines on CSE to be introduced in schools.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has said it has not approved the document and has denied plans to introduce any education that is frowned upon by Ghanaian laws and cultural norms.

Religious leaders have also threatened demonstrations with the President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong-Manso, describing CSE as “Comprehensive Satanic Engagement,” which also has the CSE acronym.

Indiscipline Among Lawyers On The Rise -CJ

Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo

The Chief Justice Sophia A.B. Akuffo has expressed worry about the level of indiscipline that is creeping into the legal profession in Ghana.

According to her, the current state of Ghana Bar is not the best as there has been an increase in the number of disciplinary complaints brought against lawyers.

Speaking at the induction of 305 lawyers at the University of Ghana, Justice Akuffo stated that most of the complaints that are brought before the General Legal Council (GLC) are against younger lawyers.

She observed that the root cause of the complaints was lack of efficiency evidenced by disloyalty, indiscipline and the quest to get rich quick.

She, therefore, admonished the new lawyers to exhibit integrity and good character in their practice of law as those are tenets of paramount importance in the legal profession.

She urged the new lawyers who were called to the Bar to take the code of ethics of the profession seriously, and must at all costs avoid brushes with the law in order to ensure that no disciplinary action is instituted against them.

She warned that the General Legal Council would not spare any lawyer, new or old, who falls foul of the law.

Quality Lawyers

Justice Akuffo was adamant that the GLC would ensure that only quality lawyers were churned out by the Ghana School of Law.

She stated that the legal profession was a noble profession and the GLC would not relent in its effort to ensure the production of only quality lawyers, adding that “a profession that can assure that every membership is by merit is a profession to be proud of.”

The Chief Justice reminded the new lawyers of the challenges that lied ahead of them, including the demands from society, especially from their clients for them to render loyal service and put their clients’ interest first before theirs.

She told the new lawyers that challenges may come their ways “but that is what makes life worth living provided you maintain the right professional character. Prepare to take advantage of the opportunities that will come your way.”

Justice Sophia Akuffo also indicated that a call to the Bar opens the door to another journey and urged the new lawyers “never to be too proud or too shy to ask questions as help is always at hand for those who ask for it.”

The enrolment ceremony was attended by members of the General Legal Council, some Justices of the Superior Courts, lawyers as well as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Afua Akuffo.

Some of the new lawyers who performed creditably in various fields were awarded with certificates. Kezia Owusu-Ansah was awarded the overall best student.

Napo Rebutts Mahama’s Sex Education Claim

$

Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has descended on ex-President John Mahama for making ‘convenient’ statements about the controversial Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), which the government says is not part of the curriculum for basic schools.

According to him, Mr. Mahama’s erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government introduced Sexuality Education in 2015 but is now turning around to score cheap political points as regards the matter.

The minister said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration had not introduced the CSE as is being claimed, and said the government would never do anything to jeopardize the country’s cultural norms and practices.

He said he was stunned to see Mr. Mahama and the NDC, who introduced the subject in their time, making a U-turn to blame the NPP government for the policy.

Speaking at the National UTAG Congress at KNUST in Kumasi yesterday, the minister said he was not happy with Mr. Mahama’s ‘hypocritical’ stance on the matter.

Napo stated that he had been chastised unjustifiably by the public because of Mr. Mahama’s “propaganda and dirty politics.”

According to him, he would definitely come out boldly with evidence and other facts to expose the hypocritical nature of Mr. Mahama and the NDC.

“I will speak directly to John Mahama on Monday. He is a hypocrite and that is not the way to exercise leadership,” Napo said.

Setting the record straight, Dr. Prempeh stated that Cabinet had not approved the CSE, so he didn’t know why he was being lambasted.

“The guidelines for the Comprehensive Sexuality Education doesn’t have Cabinet’s approval, therefore, there is no subject on the CSE as I speak now. The pictures that you see on the Internet were published by John Mahama’s NDC in 2015; therefore, nobody can accuse me of that,” he said.

“Why should someone who has published a book on Sexual Education in 2015 turn to blame me?” the minister queried.

According to him, as the Minister of Education, he would never allow anybody to import foreign culture on schoolchildren in order to jeopardize their future.

He said Article 39 stipulates that the culture of the country should be given a priority whenever any decision is taken on education, and he is aware of that.

Napo, who seemed very disturbed over Mr. Mahama and the NDC’s action, said, “If we don’t stop this dirty politics, governance will be difficult.”

Oppong-Boanuh Confirmed IGP

IGP James Oppong-Boanuh

The Council of State at their meeting yesterday confirmed the appointment of Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh as the substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Constitution demands that the Council of State confirms or otherwise the President’s recommendation of a person for the highest law enforcement office in the country.

The confirmation puts paid to a period of uncertainty as to whether or not the man who took over from his predecessor Mr. David Asante-Apeatu was going to be confirmed or asked to go home having after all exhausted his official permissible period of service in the Police Service.

But with the President’s constitutionally vested power to extend the service of a public official regardless of the end of the official end of service if he so wished and if so is acceptable to the Council of State, he is staying on for the next two years.

The President’s announcement via his official spokesperson is expected any moment from now.

Lucky Man

Just when it appeared he was about to end his career, he was granted a one-year contract service in October 2018 as Deputy Director-General of the Police Service effective October 8, 2018 to October 7, 2019 by President Akufo-Addo.

At the time of his appointment in an acting capacity as IGP, of course, the chief constable was told he should hold the fort until a substantive person was appointed. Many, however, knew it was only a formality and that he would eventually get the nod.

With every superior officer dreaming of one day heading the law enforcement institution, he too had that dream which has now come true.

Baptism Of Fire

Although a seasoned cop, his appointment in an acting capacity as IGP was greeted with the murder of the policewoman in Tamale. It was a test for him to prove his mettle as the man to achieve results.

He promised to hunt down the killers and within a few days his promise was fulfilled and the suspected culprits are currently on trial.

More Deaths

As if that was not enough of a test, other cops were murdered in the Ashanti and Eastern regions and later in the Central Region where two cops died at the hands of suspects who have already been rounded up and currently behind bars, with charges preferred against them.

Expectation

Mr. Oppong-Boanuh will come under the Ghanaian public radar over how he overcomes the motley challenges of law enforcement in the country.

In spite of the challenges of the dearth of logistics which has in recent times received massive government support and, therefore, on the verge of being overcome, there is one monster which is the presence of bad nuts in the ranks.

No Mercy

So far though he has not showed mercy on those cited for acts injurious to the image of the police.

During the passing-out parade of freshly minted police officers at the Police Training School in Accra, he charged the cops to be mindful of their conduct as those found wanting would be shown the exit.

A few days ago, a cop was captured on camera whipping a suspect at the Koforidua Railway Police Station for which the culprit is already on interdiction pending the commencement of service enquiry into the unbecoming conduct.

Rule Of Law

With a President passionate about the rule of law and respect for human rights, the new IGP has a full plate on how to ensure that his officers do not fall foul of acceptable standards.

The Man Oppong-Boanuh

The new IGP was born in 1958 at Aboabo No 1 in the Dormaa District of the former Brong Ahafo Region.

He obtained his GCE Ordinary and Advanced Levels at the Dormaa Secondary School and is an alumnus of the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law. He was called to the Ghana Bar in 1984.

Between 1986 and 1988, he worked as the Legal Officer at the Legal Department of the Agricultural Development Bank in Accra.

He did two years at the Ghana Police Training School and the Ghana Police Academy which included fieldwork at the Accra Central Police Division, graduating in 1990.

During his time with the Ghana Police Service, he has held several command and staff positions including Chief Staff Officer to the Inspector-General of Police (1990-1996); Director-General/Welfare, Director-General/Human Resources; Regional Commander, Director-General/Legal and Prosecutions and Deputy IGP.

Foreign Missions

He worked in the United Nations Mission in Mozambique (ONUMOZ) in 1994 and with the United Nations Transitional Authority in East Timor (UNTAET) from 2001 to 2002.

From November 2004 to March 2005, he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS).

On August 19, 2010, he took up duties as Police Commissioner to the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on 19th August 2010. He succeeded South African Micheal Fryer.

Deputy IGP

To support him as the Deputy IGP, DAILY GUIDE has learnt is COP/Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohunu, the man who until his elevation was the Director General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

At Last An Action On Plastics

The most poignant action yet has been taken against plastic pollution in the country. It is a relief worth celebrating considering the tonnes of the waste being generated across the country and the attendant negative fallout from the occurrence.

An action, a rare one at that involving the government and the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) sounds promising.

When an organization with such clout and expertise links up with government to contain a menace, the outcome all things being equal will be positive.

We have observed over the past few years the mounting challenges being created by plastic pollution in the country. Although a worldwide phenomenon, individual countries especially outside our hemisphere are tackling it in their own way. Actions such as multiple use plastics and the production of biodegradable ones to an outright ban have been adopted in some countries. While we may not be able to contain the immediate effects of an outright ban, there are measures we can adopt to mitigate the negative economic and environmental effects of plastic pollution in our part of the world.

There are multiple negative effects of plastic pollution in the country as it is elsewhere in the world. Besides the eyesore caused by pieces of flying plastics the havoc these stuff cause in our part of the Atlantic Ocean is enormous:  the partnership seeks to address the leakage of plastics into the Atlantic Ocean.

As we pointed out in one of our editorials on the subject, fishermen can best tell us what plastics are doing to their trade. It is common for them these days to catch more plastic products than fish.  And to think that the problem is man-made and therefore avoidable is even more worrying.

For a long time, action against plastics has been restricted to conference room discussions or even academic discourses with nothing in the areas of practical action visible.

There is a silver lining in the horizon now, which makes us happy. Besides the partnership arrangement, we think that there should other accompanying measures worthy of consideration by policymakers.

The private sector, especially actors who produce a lot of plastic stuff must be compelled by law to manage the effects of their products. They should, for instance, be made to part with a certain percentage of their profits to a special account to be used to manage the consequence of plastic pollution. Shopping malls and department stores should be encouraged to turn to paper bags.

There should be more frequent discussions about plastic pollution on the airwaves as a means of sensitizing the populace.

We also think that a compulsory addition of that chemical which would render plastics biodegradable should be enforced.

Critical education on the effects of plastic pollution should be taught at both primary and JHS levels as an extra-curricular activity.

When children grow up with an understanding about their environment, they would be in a better position to join the war against plastic pollution.

Period seminars on the subject with attendant issue of communiqués would keep the subject on the front burners for a long time.

Underestimating The Meek And Gentle

The most noticeable thing about Asiakwa, the Akyem town in which I was born and brought up, was the genial nature of its people.

Because the ethnic groups living there had become so integrated with us, it mattered little that my best friend was called Amusa Joseph. He had Yoruba origins, but because he had been born at Asiakwa, he spoke better Twi than Yoruba.

Funnily, it was he who taught me how to approach a beautiful Ewe girl in her own language!  I also had an Ewe friend called Gasimon, but it never occurred to me to ask him how to address the girl. Because my friendship with Amusa went deeper. So trying to help me make a conquest came naturally to him.

Another funny thing was that there were other boys in our school whom, one would have thought, would gravitate towards Amusa more than I did — boys like Raimi (another Yoruba). But that was not the case. My half-brother Kwasi Kwaakye also had a close Yoruba friend – Raimi’s brother, Tafa. As we all went about, no one could have torn us apart.  Yoruba, Akyem, what was that?

At home, too, my father imported a nubile beauty from Krobo! But try as my mother would, we kids refused to apply the same resentment to her presence as she did. My father actually had a son with the Krobo woman. Then, out of the blue, she took herself off to Krobo and never came back.   I don’t know to this day, what transpired between her and my father to make her go do this. I’ve often wondered what became of her son. Somewhere in Krobo, is there a pack of DNA, nearly identical to mine, walking about?  I can only hope that  he doesn’t ever commit a crime and set forensic experts on my trail,  because his DNA matches mine!

My eldest brother also imported a lady from the Volta Region to be his love bride. Again, very beautiful she was. Nobody knew her surname – it wasn’t necessary. We just called her “Auntie Abenaa”.  She stayed with us, even when my brother passed away.

But the greatest hero as a child was a man called Maama, from Mossiland, whom my grandmother had employed to look after her cocoa farms.  My grandmother was the queen mother of our town, and lived in one of the few houses which had a cemented compound.  Everyone would have loved to live in such a posh house, but it was to Maama, whom she loved to bits, that she gave a room there, while his fellow “strangers” lived   in the Zongo.

That’s how I had easy access to Maama, and often went into the bush with him. He knew how to get the best-tasting apem plantains (those that had fallen down but had deliberately not been “de-bunched”.) When such plantains that had spent time on the ground matured, they acquired a taste quite distinct  from that of plantains  that had matured before being  cut down. How did Maama know this? I worshipped his knowledge!  These apem, when eaten with fresh cocoyam leaves mixed with okro and “scented  pepper”,  taking care to ensure that the vegetables  were  only half-boiled  (Maama’s recipe!) put a different complexion on the term, “a meal made in heaven”!

Another of my very best friends in school was Kwadwo Koto, who had a Mossi father who often visited Maama. Kwadwo Koto   was forced to change his name to Kwadwo Afoakwa  when he was enrolled into school. I don’t think he was too pleased with having two names, just because his uncle was a pompous presbyter who thought it was more “dignified” to call him Afoakwa than the Koto which everyone knew him by.   As I said, Afoakwa had a Mossi father and an Akyem mother, but no one ever treated him any different. In fact, personally speaking personally, he was the nicest of the friends I had in school.

You see, Afoakwa’s doting father gave him money. So he could buy things like chalk, toffee and “bofloat” [doughnuts] for me! This was in exchange for a private help I gave him with his lessons. He was quite big when he enrolled in school, and reading and writing did not come easy for him. He thus entertained the fear that the children would laugh at him behind his back for being an “opanin toto” (big in physique but tiny in the brain area.)

I am telling you all this because the Akyems are currently at the receiving end of some particularly nasty insults directed at them not as individuals but as a group. Of course, individual behaviour can never be guaranteed by anyone. But to abuse a whole group of people because someone had been offended by a member of the group is crass behaviour.

Do the NDC members who have been abusing the Akyems realise, for instance, that in the 1950s, when Akyem Abuakwa and Asante were at the forefront of the “Mate Meho” movement (NLM), one of the most spectacular examples of political “detribalisation” occurred in Akyem Abuakwa?  The Okyenhene of the time, Nana Ofori Atta II, was a staunch NLM member. But many of his own “stool sons” were CPP adherents. One of these was Aaron [later Kofi Asante] Ofori Atta, who became Kwame Nkrumah’s Minister of Local Government and later Speaker of Parliament. He stood against, and won a seat– the Akyem Abuakwa Central Constituency — from his own father’s brother, the redoubtable Dr. J B Danquah!

So by all means, NDC guys, don’t spare individual Akyems if they annoy you. But don’t lump all Akyems together and invoke fire and brimstone upon their heads!

When Pastors Learn From Jesus (4)

$

A TRUE Christian pastor trains people to be good citizens and ambassadors of God. But how are pastors made? Many think that pastors are made only by training in the Word of God. Of course, graduating from Bible College is pivotal, but that alone cannot make a person suitable to serve as a servant of Jesus Christ. Knowing the Word is one side of the coin, and having the Holy Spirit upon the minister is another side.

When we learn from Jesus Christ, we would see that He was prepared in both the Word and the Spirit. Our Lord was first trained in the Word of God before later He was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power. Now, it is one thing receiving the Holy Spirit, but it is another thing making Him remain on you. The Bible says when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus Christ, He remained on Him. There is no report of the Holy Spirit departing from Jesus Christ throughout His ministry.

“And John bore witness: I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John 1:32-34).

Now, it is important for us to understand that the Holy Spirit is not a dove but a person, who teaches, counsels, guides, comforts, helps, warns and creates. John only saw the Spirit in a revelation descending gently and humbly like a dove on Jesus Christ. Thus the interpreters ought to have used the appropriate pronoun, ‘He’, to refer to the Holy Spirit, and not, ‘it’, as used in Scripture.

Essentially, when pastors of today diligently learn from the Lord Jesus, we would be exposed to the secret of making the Spirit of God remain on our lives. Many receive the Holy Spirit, who makes them zealous for God in ministry, but after a while the divine energy and fire of the Spirit disappear. But in the case of our Lord Jesus, it is written that the Holy Spirit descended and remained on Him. The secret was that Christ Jesus never sinned.

Unrepentant sins like bitterness, anger, unforgiveness, crude joking and others in our lives grief the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:25-32). Years ago, a pastor who had committed adultery told his church members that he could never lose the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon his life. He seemed to suggest that once a pastor receives the Holy Spirit, he would always have Him remain on him no matter the habitual sins he tolerated and committed.

Many misinterpret or misunderstand the verses of Scripture below to deceive themselves and other believers. “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29). “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” (John 14:16).

Yes, the calling and gifts of God upon Christians are without repentance. That is, God does not change His mind about His call on a pastor. And indeed, the Helper, Holy Spirit, is given to be with believers forever, but we must carefully read these verses of Scripture with deeper understanding. The only way a minister can have the Holy Spirit to be with him forever, that is, without leaving him, is when the minister learns to please God always. That was what Jesus did to have the Spirit remain on Him.

“And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him” (John 8:29). You see, always doing things that please God is the secret to having the Holy Spirit be with you forever. You can infer from the words of Jesus that doing what displeases God may cause His Spirit to leave you. In other words, the Spirit of God would leave pastors, who deliberately sin against God especially those who reject the Lord Jesus Christ or become apostate.

Often when the Holy Spirit leaves a person, he or she opens themselves up for evil spirits to possess them to continue doing some mighty works. They may be used to perform some miracles thinking that they are still being used by God, but they are actually being used by the devil to lead many astray. These are the ministers who may be rejected by the Lord Jesus Christ on the last day for being workers of iniquities (Matthew 7: 21-23). And there are many such apostles, prophets and bishops in the world today.

If a pastor sins and refuses to repent, or continues to disobey the commands of the Lord, he may lose the anointing of God upon his life. This means his calling may be there but the divine energy, ability or power to function in it will not be present on his life. The pastor may be left to do the work of God under the influence of human spirit or an evil spirit. How dangerous it will be for him!

David knew this secret; that is why he pleaded with the Lord not to take away His Holy Spirit from him after he had sinned. In his prayer of confession, David said, “Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me, (Psalm 51:11, KJV). After David had committed adultery and murder, he knew that God could take His Holy Spirit from him, and reduce him to be an ordinary person as it happened to his predecessor, King Saul.

Saul was an anointed servant of God, but when he sinned against God, and refused to repent, the Bible says, “Now the Spirit of the lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him,” (1 Samuel 16: 14). And what happened to Samson? He habitually committed sexual immorality until one day, the Spirit of God left him (Judges 16:20).

Drop CSE Says NDC Minority

Haruna Iddrisu

The Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has asked the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to immediately withdraw the new curriculum meant for basic education that contains the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), since many Ghanaians including majority of NPP members are against its implementation.

The Minority also called on the government to immediately return the $22 million Swedish government support for the implementation of the CSE, and wash its hands completely of this ‘satanic’ syllabus that would not only destroy the moral fibre of the Ghanaian society, but also would definitely encourage the wholesale practice of gayism and lesbianism.

Bizarre Call

The Minority’s call is coming at a time when the NDC is being accused of introducing the same sexuality education in the curriculum of basic schools when it was in power in 2015.

Furthermore, the $22 million claim which was first made by the NDC MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been rubbished by the Chairman of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council, Michael Nsowah.

According to Mr. Nsowah, the processes towards the signing of the CSE was started by the NDC government when he (Okudzeto Ablakwa) was a deputy minister of education, and has urged him to show where the said money can be located.

NDC Press Conference

At a news conference yesterday, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said, “We want all funds collected in addition to manuals, guidelines, teacher resource packs and curriculum to be returned immediately to the external promoters.”

He accused President Akufo-Addo of double standards, pretending to be a devout Christian who has decided to build a national cathedral to exalt God but clandestinely accepting the practice of homosexuality in the country.

“It is most shocking that a president who carries himself outwardly as a pious builder of the Lord’s Cathedral for which he is pulling down many pre-existing structures including bungalows for judges and the passport office will expose his duplicitous character by embarking on such terrible assaults on the morals of our children,” he said.

He commended all religious bodies both Christians and Muslims for being steadfast in rejecting the new educational curriculum and condemning the NPP government for introducing the CSE which they see as alien to the Ghanaian culture.

“We will join all well-meaning Ghanaians who respect and uphold our culture and religious and moral values in high esteem to resist this CSE,” Mr. Iddrisu declared.

He used the occasion to debunk arguments in certain quarters that it was the NDC government which introduced the programme in 2015, stressing that what the NDC signed up to be included in the curriculum was “Adolescent and Reproductive Health Education” which was completely different from this, and was to be taught at the junior high school for adolescents.

He, therefore, called on all Ghanaians to remain vigilant, resolute and be determined to collectively resist the sinister motive of government to introduce this ‘demonic’ curriculum.

Pastor Outlines Vision Of His New Party

Pastor Kwabena Andrews

The General Overseer of the Life Assembly Worship Centre at Odorkor, Christian Kwabena Andrews, has held a press conference to outline the vision of his new political party— Ghana Union Movement (GUM) — which will  participate in the 2020 general elections.

Introducing his new political party on Tuesday at a press conference held on the premises of his church in Accra, Pastor Andrews said his new political party which takes its root from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s ideologies had come to liberate Ghanaians from the shackles of poverty and bad governance.

According to him, when voted into power he would operate duty-free ports. And as a result of that, all Ghanaians exporting and importing goods to and from abroad would pay absolutely nothing like what pertains in Togo.

He said when the country operated a free port, everything imported into the country would be very cheap, while citizens of neighbouring countries would troop to the country to buy goods and services which would lead to larger markets for Ghanaian goods and services.

He said he would revive all defunct factories established by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah while new ones would be created to provide employment for Ghanaians.

He further indicated that he would build a gold refinery in the country to refine Ghana’s raw gold to add more value to the mineral in order to earn more foreign exchange.

The founder of the  GUM asserted that he would introduce a new educational system that would be based on practicals and skills training, and it would be completely free at all levels to churn out products with skills and ability to work for the progress of the country.

He promised that when he wins political power, he would run the country with not more than 70 ministers of state, while salaries, allowances and ex-gratia for ministers, MPs and MMDCEs would be significantly reduced.

He also said he would build a teaching hospital in each of the 16 regions of the country and provide free accommodation as a retirement package for members of the security forces.

“We have a lot of resources and money in the country but politicians in government are misusing them and they are only there to serve their own interests and not the interests of suffering Ghanaians,” he said stressing that his new party had been formed to change the status quo for the betterment of Ghanaians.
