Concerned customers of ‘God Is Love Fun Club,’ a non-banking financial institution in the Brong Ahafo region, are to demonstrate today in Sunyani against Bank of Ghana (BoG) for refusing to heed a court order to lift a moratorium placed on the activities of the institution since March, 2015.
According to leaders of the group, they would embark on the demonstration despite the refusal of the police to grant them permit.
The police cited lack of enough men and logistics for their decision.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, the leader of the concerned customers, Kwame Baffor said the police had refused them permit on three consecutive occasions.
“We think it is a ploy to thwart our effort to exercise our civil rights to demonstrate against maltreatment being meted out to us by BoG and its Governor Dr. Kofi Wampah.
He said about 10,000 members are expected to take part in the demonstration.
One of the organizers, Nana Benkae said they would face the police if they prevent them from exercising their democratic rights.
They said the BoG placed a moratorium on ‘God Is Love Fun Club,’ which has kept their monies since March, this year together with DKM Microfinance. They said the ban on DKM had been lifted.
They said a suit filed by God Is Love Fun Club at Kumasi High Court against BoG and Dr. Wampah for acting ultra-vires was upheld.
Petitions sent to President John Mahama, the CJ, Georgina Wood, the National Chief Imam, Christian Council and the National Peace Council have not yielded positive results, they said.
The Brong Ahafo Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Christopher Tawiah told DAILY GUIDE that “we asked them to be patient because the ground is not fertile but if they refuse and something bad happens we will hold them liable. We are also working with the Public Order Act and the rights of other citizens are equally important.
“BoG doesn’t know you and they are asking the woman to bring list of all customers and she is refusing. Who are you demonstrating against BoG or the woman?” he quizzed.
