DCOP Ninson presenting an award to Sarah Afful
The Central Regional Editor of DAILY GUIDE, Sarah Afful has been honoured for being the best reporter on road safety issues in the region in 2015.
She was awarded during the launch of the Road Safety Christmas Programme and 5th National Road Safety Awards ceremony organized by the National Road Safety Commission at Gomoa Bewadze in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region on Wednesday.
Speaking on the theme; “Recognizing good practices that enhance road Safety” the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ransford Moses Ninson said most of the traffic accidents that occurred in the region were due to human error characterized by drunk driving, fatigue driving, defective vehicles, over speeding, failure to observe road signs among others. DCOP Ninson emphasized the need for all to play an effective role in addressing the disturbing trend of carnage on the roads.
He however disclosed that road accidents in the region have reduced in 2015 as against the rate in the previous year.
Giving the statistics, DCOP Ninson said the region recorded a total of 635 road traffic crashes from January to November as against 918 for the same period in 2014.
The figure, he said, represents a 30.7% reduction over 2014 adding that 112 deaths were recorded for the period under review compared to 181 for the same period in 2014 representing 38.1 per cent reduction. He hinted that 731 persons were injured from January to November 2015 as against 1032 in 2014.
The Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Stephen Anokye lauded stakeholders for their collaborative efforts of ensuring safety of the highway.
Other personalities and organizations were also awarded for their contribution towards the reduction of road accidents in the region.
